A lip flip reveals. It does not add.
Two to six units, placed along your upper lip, relax the muscle that tucks the lip inward. You get a little more of the lip you already have showing. You do not get more lip. Better you hear that from me now than from your mirror in a week.
How a lip flip actually works
The muscle around your mouth runs in a ring. Part of it pulls your upper lip down and slightly inward, which is what hides lip show when you smile and what flattens the lip against your teeth. Relax a small, specific part of that ring and the lip rolls outward. The vermilion you already own becomes easier to see. Nothing has been added and nothing has been filled.
- Best case. You have reasonable lip tissue, your upper lip vanishes when you smile, and you want a small change rather than a visible one.
- Wrong case. You want what a syringe gives. No dose of neurotoxin produces volume, and a bigger dose here does not get you closer. It gets you a lip that will not hold a straw.
- Frequently paired with. Gummy smile treatment, because the two problems share muscles and tend to turn up on the same face.
Said plainly
This is the most oversold treatment on the menu
A lip flip is cheap, quick and photographs well the moment it is done, which is a combination that invites overstatement. It is a real treatment with a real mechanism and a narrow, genuine indication. It is not a filler alternative, and any before and after that looks like a syringe of filler probably was one.
If what you actually want is more lip, say so and we will talk about filler instead, including the parts of it I cannot do either.
Lip filler insteadRead first
Before you book
Do I need Botox or filler?
One relaxes muscle, the other adds structure. A thirty second test in a mirror usually tells you which problem you have.
How long does lip filler last?
Lips break filler down faster than anywhere else in the face, and what looks like long lasting product is often something else entirely.
Does Botox hurt?
Brief and minor for most people, but not identical everywhere on the face. Here is what differs and what reduces it.
Straight answers
The lip flip questions I get most
Is a lip flip the same as lip filler?
No, and they are not substitutes. A lip flip uses a few units of neurotoxin to relax the muscle ringing your mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward, showing a little more of what you already have. Filler adds volume that was not there. One reveals, the other adds.
How much bigger will my lip look?
Slightly, and the change is in show rather than in size. If you are hoping for what a syringe of filler gives, this is not that treatment. Being told otherwise is the most common way people end up disappointed by it.
How long does it last?
Shorter than neurotoxin elsewhere, commonly in the range of six to twelve weeks. The muscle is small, it moves constantly, and the dose is tiny by design. That short interval is part of the honest cost conversation, so let’s have it before you book rather than after.
What are the downsides?
Too much product here changes how you form certain sounds, how you drink from a straw and how you whistle, for as long as it lasts. That is the trade. It is temporary, and it is exactly why the dose is deliberately small.
Can I have both a lip flip and filler?
Often, though usually not on the same day and usually not as a first step. Treating the muscle first and reassessing sometimes reduces how much filler your lip needs. That is a sequencing argument, not me trying to sell you two things.
Who should skip it?
Anyone whose goal is meaningful volume. Anyone who speaks or sings professionally and cannot live with a few weeks of adjustment. And anyone with very little upper lip show to begin with, because the mechanism has almost nothing to work with there.
